This old-fashioned skillet recipe is affordable, easy to prepare, and packed with comforting homemade flavor. Serve it alongside eggs for breakfast, grilled meat for dinner, or enjoy it on its own whenever you’re craving something warm and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes, washed and sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 slices cooked bacon, crumbled (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Wash and peel the potatoes if desired. Cut them into evenly sized slices approximately ¼ inch thick.

For extra crispiness, rinse the sliced potatoes under cold water to remove excess starch. Drain thoroughly and pat completely dry with a clean kitchen towel.

Step 2: Heat the Skillet

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the potato slices in a single layer as much as possible.

If your skillet is small, cook the potatoes in batches to prevent overcrowding.

Step 3: Fry Until Golden

Cook the potatoes for approximately 5–7 minutes without moving them too frequently. Once the bottoms develop a golden crust, carefully flip the slices.

Continue cooking for another 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until the potatoes are golden on the outside and nearly tender inside.

Step 4: Add the Onions

Add the sliced onions and butter to the skillet. Stir gently to distribute the onions among the potatoes.

Cook for another 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and become lightly caramelized.

If the potatoes are browning too quickly before becoming tender, reduce the heat slightly and cover the skillet for a few minutes.

Step 5: Season Everything

Add the minced garlic, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.

Cook for another 1–2 minutes, stirring gently so the garlic becomes fragrant without burning.

If you’re using cooked bacon, sprinkle it into the skillet and toss everything together.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve

Remove the skillet from the heat and sprinkle the potatoes with freshly chopped parsley.

Serve immediately while the potatoes are hot, golden, and delicious.
